Kosi Bay

The drive to Kosi Bay was eventful! We got about half way through the four hour drive and had to turn back. Locals complaining about the lack of water had blocked the road and were throwing rocks at anyone trying to pass. So a two hour detour had us getting to camp later than planned.

Camping by a lake, remote but lovely, Kosi Bay seems to cater mostly for fishermen. The big bonus is no monkeys, and the insects aren’t too bad either.

We made chilli beer bread with a mix Sarah and Pete bought for me, it was delicious with avocados for lunch.

We hired a local lad, Justin, who guided us to the Kosi Bay mouth about 15k away along some very sandy tracks. We were able to see the local fishing Kraals, an ancient funnel shaped design, made out of sticks that sustains some of the local population. On the way back we stopped in “Emangusi” the local town, for supplies. We asked Justine where we could buy mangos, so on the way back we stopped and the next thing was he was up a tree! Gave it a shake and we had a bag full. Small, ugly but delicious.

Day two and out came the sun, full on HOT. Relaxed around camp in the morning and were really lucky to be asked out on a boat in the afternoon by our camping neighbours Hugo and Francois. Windy and wet but lovely and warm.

Next stop the “Tembe” Elephant Park for a morning then the last of our KZN Wildlife Parks “Ndumo” before we cross into Swaziland.
